Overview

The Mellotron was an early type of sampler and a new kind of musical instrument that used tape together with a keyboard mechanism.

Each key had its own tape strip and playback mechanism. When a key was released, the tape was rewound in about 0.5 seconds by a small weight attached to the tape. When a key was pressed, the playback head moved down and touched the tape, producing sound while the tape transport mechanism pulled the tape forward, playing back the sampled sound recorded on the tape.

From today’s perspective, the mechanism feels unbelievably clunky and primitive, but considering the era when there were no other practical ways to build a sampler, it is impressive that such a powerful mechanical solution was devised to make sampling possible.

IK Multimedia has even recreated that analog and somewhat clunky system. Nicely done… though it is a bit mysterious what the real advantage is. It might be that the implementation removes the original 0.5-second limitation, but that would need to be confirmed.
