Overview
It is a software effects processor sold by IK Multimedia, a cool Italian manufacturer.
With hardware multi-effects units, it was often impossible to freely rearrange individual effects, so the flexibility of combining them was limited. However, once everything became software-based, the level of freedom increased dramatically. You can create hundreds of different effect combinations.
In addition, this tool not only models classic vintage amplifiers, but also attempts to reproduce the fine nuances of placing a microphone in front of the amp and recording the sound from it. In other words, it tries to recreate the entire recording setup in detail.
The current version is Version 3, and the pricing has become considerably cheaper. Back in the days of Version 1, I feel like it cost around ¥30,000. And on top of that, I even paid to upgrade to Version 2… So it definitely belonged to the more expensive category of software.
At the time, it was quite a groundbreaking application. Nowadays it seems that they are focusing heavily on guitar effects for the iPhone and iPad. Guitarists used to need to prepare a lot of equipment, but now you can practice guitar in your car with complex effect setups using just an iPad, an iRig HD, and a pair of headphones.
I’m not entirely sure, but it seems like you cannot practice while charging the device, which might be a bit inconvenient. On the other hand, maybe it’s just a reminder to take breaks every now and then.
I personally don’t own an iRig HD yet, so at the moment it’s just something I’m interested in.
It might also look pretty cool to go to the studio carrying an iPad, an iRig Mix, and an iBlueStomp.
