Overview

　This article is about facing one of the applications that came with TOTAL MAX but that I rarely use.

　Even if I can't create anything with it, my personal approach is to at least learn how to use it. Maybe one day I'll be able to create something with it, and if I wait until that day to start learning, it would already be too late, right? What? You don't think so? Yeah, maybe you're right.

　Just some useless knowledge.

　Even though it's such an amazing tool, I have absolutely zero composition sense, so I can't really make good use of it. That's a bit embarrassing. Maybe people who can actually compose find this kind of software really fun all by itself. As for me, I'm just the type of person who copies something and plays it.

SampleTank 4 – Expansion Sound Presets Do Not Appear

　Not every expansion sound library includes presets. For example, Extraterrestrial Saxophone does not have presets; it only provides sound library instruments.

So if you cannot select it from presets, how do you choose the library?

On the SampleTank 4 interface, look at the red bar at the top of the screen and click the musical note icon in the upper-left corner to open Parts View. For example, if nothing is loaded in the Instrument column of MIDI Channel 1, you will see Load Instrument displayed.

Move your cursor over Load Instrument and click it. The screen will change. On the far left of the new screen, you will see a list of Libraries. Expansion sound libraries will appear there.

From that list, select the desired Instrument to choose a sound. Double-clicking an item in the Instrument list loads the sound source.

Once you do that, the instrument will be loaded into Channel 1 in the Parts screen.

Give it a try.

Setting Up SampleTank 4 Expansion Sounds

　When you download an expansion sound from the IK website and extract the ZIP file, you will find an Installer inside.

During installation, the setup dialog lets you specify where the sound library should be stored.

However, you do not actually need to use the Installer. You can simply copy the multiple folders (usually around 3–8 of them) found inside the SampleTank 4 Sound Content directory.

Since multiple sound libraries are copied into the same directory, removing them later requires some manual sorting. However, keeping everything together also has an advantage: when you specify the sound library location in the SampleTank 4 settings, you only need to set it once.

If you prefer to separate each expansion sound into its own location, you can do that. Just specify multiple library locations in the SampleTank 4 settings screen (although that screen is not very convenient to use).

Sorting and removing libraries later is manageable if you understand the file patterns, so I personally think it's easier to delete them according to those patterns when necessary.

I store my libraries on an external hard disk, and I simply connect it to my laptop only when I use SampleTank 4. I don't want rarely used libraries to consume valuable SSD space on my laptop.

The maximum capacity for an M.2 2230 SSD is currently around 2TB, which can fill up quickly. If an 8TB drive in the M.2 2230 size ever becomes available, I might consider storing everything internally instead.

SampleTank 4 ST4 ImportedとST3 Imported

　In the SampleTank 4 settings, the following two folders are essential for the Sound Content paths:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3
C:\Users\Public\Documents\IK Multimedia\SampleTank 4

Instead of using each user's personal folder, the system seems to store ST4 Imported and ST3 Imported functions in the shared Public directory.

If these folders are not configured, ST4 Imported will appear at the bottom of the library list as if it needs to be downloaded. However, ST4 Imported is actually a feature that allows users to import their own WAV files.

If you click the ST4 Imported Download button, the product registration page will open in your user account page. However, there are no downloadable sound libraries for ST4 Imported.

When importing samples, you can include the pitch or assigned key in the file name. For example:

C4 SampleName.wav

If you upload a file with this format, SampleTank will automatically recognize the key assignment.

While in Parts View, click the musical note icon in the red bar at the top-left of the SampleTank 4 interface. If nothing is loaded in the Instrument column of MIDI Channel 1, you will see Load Instrument.

From the three-line icon next to Load Instrument, choose [Import Samples...] to open the import screen. Alternatively, you can simply drag and drop a file such as:

C4 SampleName.wav

directly onto the Load Instrument area to import it.

For more detailed adjustments, you will need to use SampleTank Editor.

To delete imported sounds, remove the corresponding files generated in the following location:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\IK Multimedia\SampleTank 4
