Overview

This is the one the site administrator also purchased. An upgrade for €99! It finally became the true all-inclusive version.

The following gear, which had not been included in AmpliTube MAX, has now been added. Each of these used to cost €99 individually, but now they are all included together for €99. Much appreciated.

Since I originally came from AmpliTube 2, getting everything in AmpliTube MAX plus the following additions for €99 feels like a great deal. Suddenly there is so much gear that it’s almost hard to decide which one to use. But that kind of problem is a good problem to have. With this much equipment available, you probably wouldn’t ask for anything more.

With this amount of gear, it feels like even an amateur could create sounds for almost any musical genre. I wonder if professionals could rely on it too. Maybe… maybe not. I’m not sure.

  • Amplitube Slash €99.99
  • Amplitube Metal €99.99
  • Amplitube Orange €99.99
  • Amplitube Jimi Hendrix Aniversary €99.99
  • Amplitube Fender Collection €99.99
  • Amplitube SVX €99.99
  • Amplitube AmpliTube MESA/Boogie €149.99

Someday something new might come out and it may no longer be “complete” again. But if they eventually modeled all the gear in the world, that would be amazing. For now, they seem to be covering the famous brands first—like BOSS, for example.

用語

  • VIR™ Volumetric Impulse Response 直訳:空間体積衝撃応答
This is IK Multimedia’s proprietary technology that reproduces the sound with extremely high precision when microphones are placed around a cabinet. The interface even lets you position microphones in a 3D display around the speaker cabinet.
  • DSM™ Dynamic Saturation Modeling 直訳:動的飽和設計
Another proprietary IK Multimedia technology related to analog modeling. It simulates how distortion behaves when the signal amplitude saturates during operation.

How to Use

Relationship with TONEX

TONEX uses a modeling approach. It provides models that recreate the internal processing of stompboxes, cabinets, and amplifiers using proprietary technology.

You could even call it a mysterious black box, since it’s hard to verify exactly how it works internally. However, the reproduction is accurate enough that it can be sold as a product.

Technically, there are some things it cannot do. For example, time-based effects cannot be included in modeled stompboxes. This means effects such as:

  • compressors
  • reverbs
  • delays
  • choruses
  • phasers
  • flangers

cannot be expressed as time-based or phase-based pedals within the modeling system.

In IK products, STOMP units are counted as “1 pedal,” “2 pedals,” and so on, so they are often referred to simply as pedals. This limitation is even mentioned in the TONEX manual on page 10, where a note with an underline explains what cannot be done.

Because of this, the most flexible approach is creating sounds by calling TONEX from within AmpliTube 5. AmpliTube can load TONEX as a stomp effect, allowing AmpliTube to fill in the parts that TONEX lacks.

TONEX itself also includes some built-in functionality, such as compressors and reverb placed before or after the modeled section, so it can still be used for playing on its own. However, since IK Multimedia designed them to work together, using both together is currently the most powerful approach.

If the limitations are clearly explained, people might better understand why both tools are intended to be used together. But what feels “missing” varies from person to person, and TONEX alone is already strong enough to compete in many situations.

AmpliTube also offers additional features such as:

  • amp loop FX routing
  • parallel routing
  • 2-way / 3-way complex routing
  • standalone looper and audio track functions

Some users might prefer handling missing functions inside a DAW instead. Others might use real hardware for stomp effects, which could be even more powerful. And some people may feel that TONEX alone, even with its limitations, is sufficient.

Of course, some guitarists might still say that not using simulations at all is the ultimate solution.

It’s actually quite difficult to summarize the difference between AmpliTube 5 and TONEX in a single sentence, which is probably why many people end up wandering around the web trying to understand it.

TONEX feels like a collection of very capable mysterious boxes, but you cannot freely build your entire rig piece by piece the way you can in AmpliTube.

For people who own modeling equipment—or who have the time—TONEX can make rigs more compact and easier to manage from a PC. But when you consider the pros and cons in detail, the relationship between the two systems is fairly complex.

Indeed, TONEX does not include delay, chorus, phaser, or flanger, and there are no replacements for them. That means using TONEX alone can be somewhat limiting. In some cases you might need to combine it with other applications through a DAW to achieve the sound you want.

Also, there is relatively little explanation about the presets and stomp models, so you may simply need to try them and listen. Even gear that looks similar in the interface can produce very different sounds. In addition, STOMP models are usually used individually, while amp + cabinet combinations are the main modeling approach.

There are TONEX gear items in both the STOMP and AMP categories. When loaded, each gear slot can host one model. Depending on what TONEX has already modeled, there may be gear in AmpliTube that you should avoid loading alongside it. If you load overlapping elements, it will still work—but it may sound strange.

From the site administrator’s perspective, if you are starting from scratch and don’t own any equipment, the best first step would probably be AmpliTube 5 MAX. Time-based effects are important to have. Then TONEX MAX can be used to expand distortion, amps, and cabinets almost infinitely.
