So what has improved? First of all, the amount of GEAR (equipment) included from the beginning has increased. Well, that’s to be expected. And if you include the additional gear that can be added later, there are now 300 types in total. Gear officially approved by famous manufacturers has been added, and the sound reproduction is recognized even by the original makers. That’s pretty impressive.

Another change is the recording function. It has expanded from 4 tracks to 8 tracks (though users without a license can only use 2 tracks). Compared to Version 3, which stored imported audio files, Version 4 requires you to load audio files separately for each track channel every time. That part is a bit disappointing.

However, there are additional features. One major addition is the loop function, which gives the impression that the recording system has been significantly redesigned. Officially it’s called the LOOPER. I think it refers to the kind of looping system that became somewhat popular—where you can record something on the spot during a live performance, loop it, layer another loop on top of it, record that onto another channel, and so on. This can be done across four channels, allowing for real-time improvisation.

It’s probably controlled using something like iSTOMP, which lets you send MIDI messages with foot switches.

Since I personally only own AmpliTube 2, when I use Version 3 or 4, there are tons of presets that include extra gear I don’t have. Seeing so many pieces of unusable gear makes me feel a bit miserable, and removing them is also a hassle. So I end up using Version 2 and Version 4 (in its free version state).

Basically, I use Version 2 to experiment with settings, and once I settle on a setup, I switch to Version 4. Any gear that works in Version 2 can also be used in Version 4, even if I don’t own a license for it in Version 4. As far as I can tell, the sound is almost the same.
